ISO 14001:2015

ISO 14001:2015 is an international standard for environmental management systems (EMS) developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It provides a framework for organizations to manage their environmental responsibilities systematically, with the aim of reducing negative environmental impact, meeting legislative requirements and promoting sustainability. The standard was updated in 2015 and is part of the ISO 14000 family.

Key points ISO 14001:2015
  • Purpose: Minimize environmental impact (e.g. emissions, waste, resource use), comply with environmental laws and improve environmental performance.
  • Structure: Based on the high-level structure (HLS) with 10 clauses:
    • Clause 4: Context – Understand the organization's environmental context and stakeholders' needs.
    • Clause 5: Leadership – Top management's commitment to environmental policy and goals.
    • Clause 6: Planning – Identify environmental aspects, risks, opportunities and goals.
    • Clause 7: Support – Resources, competence, communication and documentation.
    • Clause 8: Operation – Control of processes that affect the environment.
    • Clause 9: Performance evaluation – Monitoring, measurement, internal audits and compliance.
    • Clause 10: Improvement – Handle deviations and drive continuous improvement.
  • Environmental aspects: Identify and assess significant environmental impacts (e.g. energy consumption, waste management).
  • Flexibility: Can be used by all organizations, regardless of size or sector.
  • Certification: Third-party audits show that the organization has an effective environmental management system.
  • Changes from the 2004 version: Greater emphasis on risk-based thinking, life cycle perspective and climate considerations (updated in 2024).
